Feature for April 2016
Band Name: RoarShark
Genre: Reverb-o-licious Instrumental Surf
Geographical Area: Western NY / Rochester
Interview with: Brian Gemme on 3/31/16 by email
in 2010 when
Brian posted an
ad on CraigsList
looking to form
a Surf Band. It
must have been
Kismet because a
jam session was
the result of
the first three
that ad and
the result of
that first jam
Of course there are the classics; The Ventures, Dick Dale, The Surfaris, etc. but we’re more heavily influenced by 90s Surf like Man or Astroman, The Penetrators, and The Bomboras. What really keeps us going, though, are all of the many local surf bands on SG101 and NESMA, keeping surf music alive and evolving.
Brian plays a JazzMaster and Jaguar through a 63VibroVerb RI and a 63 Reverb Tank. Josh plays a Strat and Tele through a vintage Blackface Super Reverb. Neal plays a Jaguar Bass through an Ampeg. Gary plays Gretsch drums.
We have a good rapport with all of the local venues. They contact us when they’ve got spots to fill and we contact them when we want to put a show together. Outside of that, we receive requests for parties and corporate events through our website and FaceBook page.
Not too many. Actually there’s quite a surf music scene happening in Rochester. There are five or six other really great surf bands in the area. We frequently split bills and support each other by showing up for each others’ gigs.
Just knowing how to bring the fun!
It’s hard to pick just one. We’ve
got it all out there. Facebook,
Reverb Nation, RoarShark.com, and then of course there are great communities
like NESMA and SG101 where you can keep up on what’s happening in the scene.
Playing an after-show for Dick Dale is definitely one of the highlights so far.
He listened to a couple tunes and gave us a big thumbs up before he headed off
for the autograph table.
First, let us state how
honored we are to be
April’s Featured Band.
Secondly, we’re just
happy to be part of a
the fantastic surf music
community that NESMA
a nice way to keep aware
of what other bands are
out there and what’s new
and exciting in the
14. Anything else?
